Crossing the Threshold of a New Year

This time of year is often filled with a quiet mixture of melancholy and anticipation. As we close one year and stand at the edge of another, we remember the many endings and beginnings that have shaped us. We hold close the family and friends who are not crossing this threshold with us, carrying their memory in our hearts as we continue the journey. We recall the challenges we faced—those that became successes and those that taught us more about ourselves, our limits, and our resilience. We take stock of the gifts we have given and received, the moments of joy and loss, and the unexpected beginnings and endings that have marked our way.

If there is a feeling that lives alongside this melancholy and anticipation, it is one of deep grace and gratitude. We recognize that many whom we have met and loved have not been able to travel as far as we have. Our continued journey, then, becomes something to cherish—not only for ourselves, but as a way of carrying forward their presence, their meaning, and their memory as far as we are able.

This season invites us to pause and breathe, to take in the people and circumstances that surround us, and to remember that it truly takes a community to navigate a life. It is a moment to give thanks for the large and small ways we help shape one another, to reflect on the path behind us, and to hope for the road that lies beyond the threshold before us. It is also a humbling reminder that our own presence is fleeting, part of the countless breaths taken by those who came before us, and a call to gratitude for those who will one day carry our memory, presence, and meaning forward.

So, as we step into the year ahead, may we loosen our grip on what unsettles our peace and distracts us from gratitude. May we dream and laugh, ponder and play, share and welcome — living this life together with intention, generosity, and hope. And may we cross this threshold once again mindful of the gift we have been given, and eager to share it with one another.
